Rowley man sought on reckless driving charge

ROWLEY — Police is filing charges against a local man for several motor vehicle-related charges after police learned he was the one who flipped his car over early Sunday morning near the Bradford Tavern on Route 133. Furthermore, he fled from the scene before authorities arrived.

The police searched for nearly three-hours involving the departments from Ipswich, Georgetown, Newbury and a state police K-9. The police were unable to locate the alleged driver identified as 47-year-old Robert D. Martineau. This resident of Bradford Street resident was issued a summons for leaving the scene after property damage, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and marked lanes.

Chief Robert Barker of Rowley police reported that details of the crash are still under investigation, but it appeared Martineau was driving a rented Chrysler 200 sedan. At around 1 o’clock in the morning, he was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a telephone pole. The impact of the crash was so forceful that the pole snapped causing the car to flip onto its roof. Although the car managed to avoid hitting the Bradford Tavern building, but it took out a large section of the popular restaurant’s fence.

The good news was that there were no reported casualties, Barker added. Barker continued that it  took police some time than usual to trace the driver since the car was registered to a rental company.

By the time Martineau was identified as the operator, he fled from the area, police said. Since then, however, police have been in contact with Martineau’s attorney, who said his client would cooperate with authorities.

The damaged pole was immediately replaced by the town’s Light Department. It was fortunate that the restaurant was still closed at the time of the mishap.
