How Does A Traffic Light Work?

If you think that some traffic lights never cooperate with your plans to get somewhere on time, you are partially correct. It depends on where you live and where the traffic light is situated.

If the traffic light is in a major city where heavy traffic is constant, then there is not much that you can do to force the light to turn green or stay green. Such lights are on timers that adjust according to the time of day or night.

If, however, you are in a town, suburb or out in more rural areas, then the traffic lights that bedevil you might respond to your car’s presence. Getting into how that occurs can make your head spin with technical language, but here are the basics in layman’s terms:

• Sensors interact with traffic lights to make them do all sorts of operations, from turning on a lane arrow to turning green shortly after a car arrives at an intersection, to changing when too many cars are backed up at a crossroads. • The most common method for traffic light systems to detect when cars are present is a coil of wire that is embedded in the road’s surface. Such wires are laid into the asphalt after a groove is cut in the newly paved street. The wires are then sealed with a compound, which dries lighter than the dark pavement, so you can often see where these wires are at intersections. Look for the rectangular loops the next time that you stop at a red light.

• The wire in the road’s surface communicates with a sensor that measures the inductance of the road. When that inductance rises, the light “knows” that a car is in the lane and changes shortly thereafter, to remain green for a given amount of time.

• Other less common ways that light sensors detect cars are through radio waves that can bounce off moving or stationary objects, or through cameras.

• The information that the sensors gather goes to computers in control boxes, often near the intersection that they control. When cars keep passing through an intersection, the computer will keep the light green, up to a given amount of time. When the sensor is silent due to no traffic, the computer obviously “tells” the light to turn red.

• Lights stay green from 15-40 seconds on average, depending on how busy the intersection is and how many cars are passing through.

As you probably already know, other technological advances at traffic lights include amazing cameras that take a nice photo of your license plate when you are late getting through an intersection.
