Fleeing shoplifter struck, killed by car

READING, Pa. – A 22-year-old eastern Pennsylvania man was hit by two cars and killed after police reported that the person was seen shoplifted pants from Walmart and was fleeing from the security officers.

After the accident, the police identified the shoplifter as Tyler Shepler, age not specified and a resident of Muhlenberg Township in Berks County.

According to the investigators, Shepler was inside Walmart and was observed trying to steal a few pairs of jeans last Thursday afternoon. The security officers saw him pilfering the stuff and apprehended him as he was passing the lobby of the store.

Police related that when he saw the security officers, he ran across the parking lot and through a grassy area right onto the highway. He was hit by one car where he was knocked down and another car ran him over.

After he was hit, police found Shepler lying on the ground in critical condition. They immediately transported him to Reading Hospital. Due to life-threatening injuries, he expired after a while.

It was in Reading Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

On December 12, late Wednesday morning, traffic along the northbound side of Interstate 95 was disrupted as firefighters were extinguishing a fire which engulfed a car.

Traffic was again opened as all lanes of travel are now cleared past the scene of the car fire near Exit 30, between Cottman Avenue and Rhawn Street.

At least two lanes, as well as an exit ramp were initially blocked after the fire broke out. The fire was reported around 10:33 a.m.

Firefighters had most of the flames knocked down by 11 a.m.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Investigation of the accident is ongoing.
