State police: More than 40 sent to hospitals after Friday morning school bus crash in Berks

State police at Fogelsville reported Sunday that a two-vehicle crash involved a pickup truck and a school bus on Friday morning in Berks County. The mishap sent more than 40 people to area hospitals.

The police reported that truck operator identified as Steven Figueroa age 43 and resident of Kutztown, Berks County, for unknown reason, lost control of his Toyota pickup. He was driving south on Route 737 at the Interstate 78 overpass about 7:25 o’clock in the morning. The pickup ran towards the path of a school bus carrying 39 students and a driver.

The bus driver was identified as Angela Zettlemoyer, age 43 and a resident of Lenhartsville, Berks County. The truck struck the passenger side of Figueroa’s truck, said the police.

Pick-up driver, Figueroa was transported by an ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. While the school bus driver and passengers of the school bus were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital and Reading Hospital for evaluations, police reported.

Pending result of investigation, the police did not identify the school district that operated the school bus. The crash must have been due to bad weather as freezing rain deposited a layer of ice on roads across the region Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Northampton Township police was able to identify that victim who died on an accident which occurred at 1:50 in the evening of Saturday on the 1500 block of Old Jacksonville Road in the Ivyland section of the township.

A Monte Carlo SS was carrying five teens when it apparently left the road and slammed into a pole. The vehicle was torn in half and stopped in a tree. The driver and three passengers were immediately rushed to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown. Some of those injured are students in the Council Rock School District.

Last Sunday, Dr. Joseph Campbell coroner of Bucks County identified 19-year old Cameron Smithwick as the passenger that died as a result of the crash. The others passengers were also identified as Monroe Leonard Tanner IV, 18, Louis Piotti, 17, Matthew Slade, 18, and Daniel Harris, 17.
