DC cop admits to falsifying speeding tickets

It is then possible to falsify logs pertaining to the force’s photo radar equipment as a former law enforcement officer with Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department pleaded guilty of committing three counts of this kind of fraud. This ex-DC cop was accused of falsifying logs pertaining to the force’s photo radar equipment.

David Cephas was with the MPD for 22 years, but for the years 2008 and 2009, he admitted to failing to do his job of inspecting the city’s photo-radar equipment. Instead he made manual adjustments that in turn led to the city issuance of 200 traffic tickets without cause.

Cephas was earning $17,056 from the city by working overtime during a span of time that he admitted to have committed the fraud. The court documents taken by the press showed how Cephas would roll-back the clock of the mobile radar unit to avoid doing the  tests by falsifying his logs. Without being calibrated, the equipment was then used to try and catch traffic criminals speeding down city roads.

By pleading guilty to three counts of misdemeanor, he will be confined in jail for half a year and pay a fine of $1,000. The ex- officer also agreed to pay back the department the amount of $17,550 — the amount the city had to refund to the recipients of the bogus tickets.

Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said that she is glad that their department is able to insure that all their members uphold the highest standard and integrity.

The ex-officer will be receiving his sentence at the end of the month. Cephas resigned from the force in June.
